As classrooms continue to evolve, so do the tools educators use to support meaningful, language-rich learning experiences. This year, we’re excited to share two new resources from our friends at UCLA CRESST for Multilingual Learners, each designed to help educators plan, scaffold, and deliver instruction that meets the diverse needs of English learners.
Together, the Task Analysis Planner (TAP) Foldable and the Differentiated Instruction for EL/MLs Flipbook: Volume 2 (Interactive Strategies) offer practical, research-based guidance that teachers can apply immediately. Whether used independently or as complementary tools within a broader planning structure, these resources make it easier for educators to balance content rigor with thoughtful language support.
Task Analysis Planner (TAP) Foldable: A Hands-On Guide for Intentional Planning
Thoughtful instruction begins with thoughtful planning, and the TAP Foldable is built to support exactly that. Presented in a tri-fold printed format, this planning tool walks educators through a structured process for designing lessons with both content and language goals in mind.
The TAP Foldable guides teachers through five essential components of instruction:
- Student Background – Identifying cultural and linguistic assets to strengthen engagement.
- Academic Content & Cognitive Demands – Maintaining rigor while supporting complex thinking.
- Student Grouping – Making purposeful decisions about collaborative structures.
- Academic Language – Highlighting vocabulary, functions, and structures students will need.
- Receptive & Productive Language Demands – Balancing opportunities for reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Using a clear “What, So What, Now What” framework, the foldable helps educators unpack their tasks, anticipate challenges, and plan supports that promote full participation for learners at all proficiency levels. Each section includes guiding questions, reflective prompts, and examples that educators can use during lesson design or collaborative planning sessions.
A QR code inside the foldable provides access to a free, editable TAP template, making it easy to adapt the process to different teaching styles and classroom goals.

Differentiated Instruction for EL/MLs Flipbook: Volume 2 (Interactive Strategies)
For educators seeking practical ways to bring academic language to life in the classroom, the new Differentiated Instruction Flipbook: Volume 2 delivers eight all-new, interaction-based strategies designed specifically for English learners.
Building on the success of Volume 1, this flipbook focuses on practices that promote dialogue, collaboration, and meaningful engagement. Strategies such as Picture Walk, Peer Interviews, and Shared Writing offer ready-to-use structures that teachers can incorporate into lessons across subjects and grade levels.
Each strategy includes:
- Clear learning targets aligned with proficiency levels
- Modeled scaffolds for reading, writing, speaking, and listening, and speaking
- Teacher tips for differentiation and co-teaching
- Snapshots of student performance across language levels
- Color-coded visuals for quick reference during instruction
Designed in a portable spiral-bound format, the flipbook is equally useful during instruction, co-planning sessions, or professional learning communities. It also pairs seamlessly with Volume 1, making it a valuable addition to any educator’s toolkit for differentiated instruction.

Supporting Educators—and Students—Every Step of the Way
As classrooms become increasingly multilingual, resources like these empower teachers to offer richer, more inclusive learning experiences, supporting students not only in developing English proficiency but also in engaging deeply with academic content.
ELPA21 is proud to partner with UCLA CRESST for Multilingual Learners in supporting the release of these new resources and looks forward to seeing how educators incorporate them into their practice.
